According to the EEF, UK and Ireland's manufacturing industry employs over 2.6 million people and contributes on average a massive 10% of GVA. It goes without saying that the manufacturing industry has higher than normal risk of injury and risk. Despite an encouraging trend of a reduction in injuries and occupational health in the past 20 years, there is a lot more room for further improvements. Today, Health and Safety management systems need to be much more efficient and flexible to accommodate to changing environments and regulations.
Effective Software is currently working with many manufacturing companies of all sizes to improve their overall health and safety procedures. Our customers are benefiting from using our safety software through the creation of a zero harm safety culture, allowing greater access to safety data across an organisation, save administration time on low-value activities and reduced management costs including administration costs, lost time spent, insurance premiums and solicitor’s fees.
Siemens UK, part of the leading global engineering and technology services company, has been active in the United Kingdom for over 170 years. They provide innovative solutions to help tackle the UK’s major challenges. Siemens has a significant presence throughout the UK, with 13 manufacturing sites and more than 25 major offices. Today the company employs around 14,000 people in the UK, including about 5,000 in the manufacturing sector.
Siemens came to Effective Software with a need to create a more efficient system for managing their EHS data across their UK sites which would fit into both client and divisional reporting requirements. Their critical issue was that each site had a different system for the recording of EHS events and they were in need for one easy-to-use health and safety software.
Michael Armitage, the EHS Advisor for Siemens UK noted how all the sites in Siemens had some form of recording system but this was old databases or in some cases excel spreadsheets. In all cases the separate datasets such as Risk Assessments, Inspections & Audits, Method Statements and Training all sat separately with little or no interaction.
Since implementing our software, our customer success team has worked with Michael and his colleagues to develop and meet their specific health and safety needs. Michael highlighted the following key benefits from implementing our software:
- The functionality of the system. It is a system that could grow with them and meet their continuous needs which is cost effective with universal access;
- As implementation was so important to them, there was a hugely positive reaction to how Effective Software dealt with the changes that came about during implementation and how we helped them reach their objectives.
- Aggregation of data from various sources allowing accident investigators instant access to training records and risk assessments;
- Allowed the right data to be available to the right people on a self serve basis;
- The mobile app has allowed for greater analysis of inspections and audits, helping them to focus our resources in areas that will provide the best EHS outcomes;
- This data is also available for Siemens's clients helping create stronger areas of trust in their quality and EHS performance;
- The notification system allows managers to know what is going on without having to go into the system.
"The information is presented in such a way that areas of concern can be easily identified. This has enabled us to close areas of concern proactively rather than waiting for an event to occur, all possible with a reduction in the administrative burden."
Michael Armitage, EHS Advisor for Siemens.
