Preventing Incidents in the Education Industry

According to a Recent Study by the HSE, estimates show that approximately 600,000 workers sustain an injury at work and over 1.2 million workers suffer a work-related illness that they believe to be work-related. These illnesses and injuries are not shared equally across industry however, and surprisingly education ranks quite high on the list of incidents/illnesses by industry as can be seen on the chart below:

Average annual estimated rate of self-reported work-related illness and non-fatal injury by industry  (average of latest 3 years)

A large number of these incidents in the education industry are caused by Slips and Trips. Slips and trips occur across all education premises – whether a small local primary school, a busy secondary school, a multi-site further education college, or the campus of a higher education institution. They provide a wide variety of facilities including educational, leisure and residential, open to employees, pupils/ students and members of public at varying times of the day. Sites can be busy with large numbers of people moving around at the same time – often rushing.

Slip and trip accidents in education premises happen for a number of reasons.  They typically involve:

  • Members of staff or pupils/students running or carrying heavy or awkward items,
  • Wearing unsuitable footwear,
  • Poor lighting - particularly where there are uneven surfaces and changes of level
  • Contamination – both from wet surfaces – caused by water, and fluid spillages; and slippery surfaces - caused by contaminants eg. food, litter etc.
  • Obstructions – particularly bags and trailing cables
